Homemade Buttermilk Syrup
This
homemade buttermilk syrup
is a
rich, buttery topping
that turns an ordinary breakfast into something special.

Ingredients
¾
cup
buttermilk
1
cup
sugar
½
cup
butter
½
tsp.
soda
½
tsp.
vanilla extract
coconut extract or maple flavoring
Pinch
of salt
Instructions
Combine butter, sugar, salt and buttermilk in a medium saucepan.
Cook over medium high heat until mixture comes to a full rolling boil, stirring occasionally.
Boil for 1 minute over low heat.
Remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla.
Stir. It will bubble up a little bit after you add the baking soda.
Ladle hot creamy syrup over pancakes, waffles or french toast and enjoy with a side of fruit
Notes
Use a
medium saucepan
to give the syrup room to bubble when the baking soda is added.
Stir occasionally while bringing the mixture to a rolling boil.
Only boil for 1 minute
after it reaches a full boil to prevent overcooking.
Remove from heat before adding the
baking soda and vanilla
. It will bubble up when the baking soda is added.
The syrup will
thicken slightly as it cools
.
Serve warm over pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for
up to 1 week
and gently reheat before serving.
