This sourdough puff pastry Christmas tree appetizer is flaky, healthy, and delicious. It can be filled with a variety of sweet or savory fillings, making it the perfect appetizer for any holiday party or a sweet treat for Christmas morning. Homemade sourdough puff pastry is layered with the filling and cut into the shape of a Christmas tree. We enjoy homemade appetizers and snacks, especially during the long winter evenings and the holiday season. And if you've been hanging around here awhile, you know that I try to make everything from scratch and with sourdough as much as possible. So, when I saw these beautiful puff pastry appetizers, I knew I had to make them with sourdough puff pastry dough, and they are delicious!
If you are using homemade puff pastry, roll it into a thin layer and then cut the sheet in half to make two sheets of puff pastry.
Lay one sheet of puff pastry on a piece of parchment paper.
Spread the filling of your choice on the puff pastry.
Place the second puff pastry sheet on top of the first.
Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut the dough into a large triangle, or Christmas tree shape. Save the scraps of dough.
Make horizontal cuts into the long sides of the triangle, leaving a half inch section in the middle of the tree.
Carefully twist each section several times (see video).
Using the scraps of dough, cut out a star for the top of the tree and piece for the tree trunk.
Mix 1 egg and 1 Tablespoon of water together to make an egg wash. Brush on the top of the pastry with a pastry brush. This step is optional, but will give the dough a glossy golden brown look once baked.
Place on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with a vanilla glaze if your filling is sweet. Dip into marinara sauce if your filling is savory
You can refrigerate these in an airtight container for up to a week or freeze them in a freezer- safe container for up to six months.
