Cold Beef Sandwich Recipe Using Canned Meat Or Cooked Roast
This cold beef sandwich recipe is quick and easy to make because it’s made with canned venison or beef from our homestead pantry. You can also make it with leftover roast beef if you don’t have canned meat. This is a simple recipe that I rely on a lot in the summertime when I am packing cold lunches for my husband.
I make our favorite Amish white bread recipe several times a week so I can quickly make sandwiches when needed. This cold beef sandwich recipe goes perfectly with the Amish white bread, and is a meal the guys will eat several times a week without complaint. You could also make this recipe a bit more fancy by serving it on crusty sandwich rolls sliced diagonally, or on kaiser rolls. This is a great recipe for busy seasons of life like summertime or back to school, but can also be used as an appetizer for events like weddings, showers, or summer parties.
Canned Meat
It is a good idea to have some canned meat in your long term food storage. Having canned meat in your pantry is a huge time saver and makes healthy fast food possible without ever having to go out to eat. It’s also a great way to preserve your meat, so if you lose electricity and your freezers quit running, you’ll still have shelf stable meat available. And in the case of an emergency, it doesn’t even need to be cooked because it’s already been cooked during the canning process.
I have canned venison, beef, chicken and turkey in my pantry, and from that I can make a myriad of fast and easy recipes to feed my family. You really can’t tell any difference between the canned venison and beef or the chicken and turkey. They both taste the same, and the canning process leaves the meat nice and tender. Some of our favorite things to make with our canned venison or beef is beef and noodles, hot roast beef sandwiches, Italian beef sandwiches, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, BBQ pizza and vegetable beef soup. The canned chicken and turkey is really good in things like chicken taquitos, enchiladas, chicken noodle soup, chicken patty melts, and chicken tetrazinni.
How To Cook Roast Beef
If you don’t have canned meat, you can also cook up a roast in your slow cooker or crock pot. My favorite cut of beef for making roast is chuck roast. Just add a little bit of water to the bottom of the slow cooker along with some salt and pepper. Cook on low for 8-10 hours until roast falls apart easily. I like to make some delicious roast beef sandwiches with gravy for supper after the roast has been cooking all day. Then the next day, I can make the leftover roast into this beef salad sandwich recipe.
If you like your food to be a bit more spicy, you could always add some red onion, pickled jalapenos or other hot peppers to this sandwich filling.
Homestead Pantry Staples
The other thing I keep stocked in my homestead pantry is zucchini relish. It’s always hard to know what to do with all the zucchini from the garden, but relish is a great way to preserve it! We make dill relish for use on cheeseburger pizza, but for this cold beef sandwich recipe we use sweet zucchini relish. If you make these sandwiches with canned venison, zucchini relish, homemade mayonnaise, and homemade bread, you’ll only have pennies into each delicious sandwich, These sandwiches are much cheaper and healthier than buying lunch meat, and will save you a lot of money at the grocery store.
